Try an Organic Free-Range Turkey

November 13, 2009

As Thanksgiving approaches it is time to plan the holiday feast.  When it comes to the meat it’s better to be safe and buy organic.  I am always trying to save money, but there are times where I’m willing to pay for quality.  Since most people have turkey leftovers long after Thanksgiving it is worth paying the little extra.  Not only is it better for your family but buying organic free-range turkeys supports the local farmer.  The care and processing of the turkeys is also much different from a local farm than a factory farm.

Often times at factory farms there are so many animals in a confined area that they are injected with antibiotics and other drugs to prevent them from getting sick.  They are also injected with more chemicals later in the packaging process to keep them fresh since they are being packaged and frozen long before Thanksgiving day.  Local farmers, on the other hand, often have free-range turkeys which means they don’t need to be injected with chemicals to prevent illness because they have the space to roam.  Turkeys from a local farmer are also prepared differently.  They are processed about a week before Thanksgiving, so again there are no chemicals needed to keep them juicy and moist.  Which brings me to another benefit of buying organic, the turkey will taste much better.  But don’t take my word for it, try an organic free-range turkey this holiday.  Your family will thank you for it.
