Organic Baby Fabric

February 25, 2010

Cotton is the most common organic fabric.  But what about bamboo?  I have heard of clothing made from bamboo but was curious about the benefits over cotton.  Much to my surprise bamboo clothing is almost better than organic cotton clothing.  For starters, bamboo blocks 98% of harmful UV radiation.  So along with the sunscreen you apply to your baby’s skin, the bamboo clothing adds a little extra protection.  Bamboo fabric is also 3-4 times more absorbent than cotton and yet it is still breathable to keep your baby cool during those hot summer months.  Bamboo is hypoallergenic and extremely soft on your baby’s skin.  Some say it is softer than pima cotton, a superior blend of cottons that is know for it’s softness, durability and absorbency.  So next time you’re trying to decide between fabrics, you wont have a doubt in your mind that bamboo is equal if not superior to organic cotton.

on the surface this is correct. however, the process to turn bamboo into the amazingly soft fabric that you see in stores can be extremely toxic.

That’s very interesting about bamboo. Thanks for the input. I also wonder about the toxicity the previous comment is referring to….
If the process is toxic, then they wouldn’t be able to call it Organic, right?

I agree with Melissa. I have not found any bamboo products to sell on my website because of the chemicals used in the processing. I have researching this for over two years. On the plus side, manufacturers are taking notice and things are improving. But, as of not, I only offer certified (GOTS) organic cotton.

I have also heard that bamboo is not an eco-friendly fabric at this time because of the energy required to turn the plant into a wearable fabric.

I import <a href="http://www.babiesaregifts.com/eco-baby.html" baby sleep sack products from Australia made of organic bamboo and, according to their research, bamboo helps baby to sleep at an optimum temperature – cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Wouldn’t this make is a nice option?
