Indoor Organic Gardening

January 10, 2010

Have you been eager to start your own organic garden but don’t have the outdoor space?  Growing indoors comes with many benefits such as not having to deal with the winter season.  Having live plants in your home will also help keep your indoor air clean.  There’s no better time to start than now, at the beginning of the new year.  You can grow fruits, vegetables and herbs in a container almost anywhere in your house. It’s best to start simple with herbs, lettuce and sprouts.  Check out the Garden Guides for a list of fruits and vegetables that grow well in containers.  You can use pretty much any kind of container from a ceramic pots to empty ice cream buckets.  When choosing a container it’s important to keep in mind the type of plant you intend to grow in it.  To avoid over watering it’s recommended that you choose a container with holes or make some.  When choosing soil and fertilizer look for the “OMRI listed” label.  The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) selects the products that are acceptable for the national organic program.  It would also be a good idea to consider purchasing a light as some plants require more light than others.  Since you’re growing inside you don’t shouldn’t expect any pest problems but it is still important to be prepared with an organic pest control agent.  With a little research you should be able to find several all natural pest control products and methods.
