Cotton is the most common organic fabric. But what about bamboo? I have heard of clothing made from bamboo but was curious about the benefits over cotton. Much to my surprise bamboo clothing is almost better than organic cotton clothing. For starters, bamboo blocks 98% of harmful UV radiation. So along with the sunscreen you apply to your baby’s skin, the bamboo clothing adds a little extra protection. Bamboo fabric is also 3-4 times more absorbent than cotton and yet it is still breathable to keep your baby cool during those hot summer months. Bamboo is hypoallergenic and extremely soft on your baby’s skin. Some say it is softer than pima cotton, a superior blend of cottons that is know for it’s softness, durability and absorbency. So next time you’re trying to decide between fabrics, you wont have a doubt in your mind that bamboo is equal if not superior to organic cotton.
Did you know that those puffy jackets that keep our precious babies so warm can actually reduce the effectiveness of their car seat? Car seats weren’t meant to be used with bulky clothing. Compressible clothing prevents the harness from holding your child in the seat securely. The harness should fit snugly against your child’s chest, you should be able to fit no more than two fingers under the harness. In the event of an accident if the harness is not fitted tight enough the child could potentially be thrown from the car seat. You can still keep your baby warm and safe in their car seat without risking their safety. For toddlers, have them remove the jacket before gettin in the car seat and once they are buckled in put the jacket on backwards with their arms through the sleeve. For infants (and toddlers as well) you can simply cover them with a blanket once they’ve been fastened in. Although the winter season is coming to an end this is still important information for any parent or caretaker to know, so please share this with your friends, family and babysitters.

About two years ago the FDA had declared the use of the chemical bisphenol A to be safe. It appears they have recently changed their minds admitting that BPA raises “some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate glands of fetuses, infants and children.” For more information on this topic check out this article.
